An opal cover on a lamp is opaque and ensures even light distribution by diffusing and scattering the light. The result is soft, glare-free lighting without sharp shadows. An opal cover is often used in areas where bright yet soft lighting is required, such as homes, offices or hospitals.
A microprismatic cover on a lamp consists of many small prismatic elements that refract and reflect light in different directions to produce an even, glare-free light. The effect is similar to that of opal covers, but the prismatic elements direct the light more strongly and occasionally bright spots of light can be created on the surface. Microprismatic covers are often used in areas where strong yet uniform lighting is required, such as large offices or industrial environments.
